I was diagnosed with Stage 1 DCIS Breast Cancer in June of this year. My cancer was not a tumor and there was no lump. A diligent radiologist noticed a new calcium deposit on my annual mammogram and thought it was suspicious. A stereotactic biopsy showed the calcium deposit contained cancer cells. I never miss an annual mammogram.
To keep my sanity, I started a blog and tried to find as much to do as possible. One of the things I did was start a Dishcloth Designers Yahoo group ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Dishcloth_Designers/ ) right after my surgery on July 2. I'd always wanted to make a calendar of knitted dishcloths. I asked the group if they would be interested in helping me put this together a breast cancer dishcloth calendar and donate the proceeds to breast cancer research. The response was overwhelming. I made a lot of new friends and got wonderful support through my radiation.
Because of the research, women with the type of breast cancer I had no longer have mastectomies or chemo. Also because of research and modern technology, I had an MRI which showed a second spot not to be cancer. Not all hospitals have this capability.
Radiation is over and I'm feeling great. I started a blog as soon as I was diagnosed. You are welcome to read it but remember some of the time I was writing out of anger and frustration. http://fitterknitter.blogspot.com/
